Draft – Superfast Cymru – Superfast Wales
Access Community Broadband
News September 2020
Lots of water has gone under the bridge since I last produced any news on obtaining decent or fast broadband in our area. Despite badgering BT/Openreach and with their promise to enable Cabinet 1 nothing ever happened. Excuses like wayleave issues, Superfast Cymru project funds came to an end and then they failed to obtain more money to wipe-up areas such as ours. Sadly nothing.
Anyway some people chose Satellite Broadband while others obtained Point to Point Microwave Radio broadband, however, some homes cannot receive the later due the terrain.
So what’s next?
Well there is a little light at the end of the tunnel (no pun intended).
There is something called Gigabit Voucher scheme this for rural residents and business in Wales with broadband speeds of less than 30 Mps available may be eligible for additional funding from the Welsh Government towards the cost of installing gigabit-capable broadband to their premise when part of a group project.
Welsh Government will pay up to an additional £1500 per resident and £3500 per small to medium size business (SME) in order to help connect harder-to-reach rural properties.
Something useful to know is the UK Government’s Rural Voucher Scheme doubles the funds available for an installation. Happy days, well it will be if Openreach excess charges policy applies per property by adding in a further to £3400.
Please note other suppliers are available across Powys.
No separate application is required as eligible properties receive the top-up funding when benefiting from a Rural Gigabit voucher through a registered supplier.

So if you would like the benefits of fast broadband the voucher scheme “could” be the answer to providing a fibre optic network to our properties.
So what to do
- Check if you already have access to fibre broadband service
- Join a Community Fibre Partnership
Enter your landline or postcode into their fibre checker. If the results indicate you’re not part of current fibre plans and would like to explore a co-funded fibre option with Openreach, register your interest and they will be in touch. There is no obligation at this time
- Log Your details
Email me to confirm you have registered or just confirm to me that you are interest in joining our community fibre partnership. I will need your address, contact number and email address. I will not share your detail with anyone unless I have your permission.
For now my plan next is to also register our community with the Welsh Government Access Broadband Cymru and fill in their application form. See https://gov.wales/go-superfast/boost-your-broadband This site interestingly talks about grants available.
I look forward to hearing from you
